Well done, Spectrum, for reducing the entry fee to the 2010 Dudley tournament -- clearly the multitude of posts supporting my earlier moan had an effect.

Tournament nomenclature
A small point but I wonder if the title of the "Minor" might be changed to "Intermediate"? It might just be me giving myself airs and graces . just a thought.

Hi. I'm interested in entering the Dudley tournament along with my son. Can you please tell me what the grades for the different sections will be?

I notice that the entry fee for the next Dudley congress has risen to £30, and feel that some debate is needed over the relatively high cost of entering Spectrum events.
Entry to the 2005 Dudley event was £ 22 -- 2007 was £ 25, and 2008 was £ 28.
There is also a noticeable difference in the ratio of entry fee to prize money, compared with other forthcoming tournaments :
Doncaster entry £ 23 1st prize £ 250
York £ 25 £ 270
Kidlington £ 25 £ 250
Wrekin £ 20 £ 200
Dudley £ 30 £ 100

Spectrum entry fees have always been higher than most, but the comfortable venues have usually been worth the extra expense. However I do wonder whether a balance point has been reached -- my chess club`s annual subscription is less than £ 30!
How do other people feel?

Thank you for your comment, Peter. There are a few points I would like to make.

(1) If you enter On-Line the fee is £29 - it is only £30 if you still enter by post.

(2) The other congresses you mention, I am sure, would attract a much larger entry, thereby making their economic viability more likely.

(3) Spectrum Chess is not lucky enough to benefit from sponsorship. All costs have to be met to put on these 'hotel' congresses.

(4) Playing chess in comfortable hotel surroundings has not got any cheaper since 2005. When we took the decision to book accommodation for players requesting it, the break-even threshold rose slightly. We always will try to balance things fairly.

(5) Prize money has increased for 2009. The winner of each section in 2005/06/07/08 would have walked away with just £80 (from a £150 per section fund), now it is to be £100 (from a £180 per section fund). A 25% increase in first prize (20% increase of overall prize fund) but less than 7.14% increase of entry fee - just 3.57% if entering On-Line.

I hope that goes some way towards showing that Spectrum Chess is excellent value for money.

Tony Corfe to leave "Spectrum Chess" after 4 years.
Tony will go his separate way at the end of the year after a Boardroom disagreement during the summer months.

With regards to David Murchie's comment on not receiving a reply it is standard practice on almost all websites for a confirmation email to be sent out for the user's records, especially where financial transactions are concerned. It's good for customer confidence.

Having filled in and submitted my entry form the site didn't give me any instructions about paying my entry fee. The site tells me how much I need to pay but not whether I can pay via the website, or need to post a cheque, or can pay on the day. Again this is something I would expect to be informed about in a confirmation email.

As a newcomer I never thought to look under Packages to find price of entry only perhaps you could duplicate it else where or a name other than packages
Sunday 7 September 2008

Spectrum Chess Response   Thank you for your suggestion, David.

We will look into calling this section 'Prices' rather than 'Packages'.

What do other players think? Is the 'Packages' title confusing? I would advise all newcomers to our site to look at all the selections from the left hand orange menu. There is much information about the event to be had there.

Could you please consider sending an automatic message message in receipt of a message. When using your send facility the message does not show up in my send queue so I was uncertain whether it had been sent
Sunday 7 September 2008

Spectrum Chess Response   By 'message' I assume you mean the on-line Entry Form. The reason your entry does not appear in your 'Sent Messages' folder is because email is not involved. You are filling in a form on the Website and it is this that is sent.

You do get an immediate automatic confirmation on your screen that your Entry Form has been sent to us successfully. Also you will see your name appear in the Player's list on the Website for the event you have entered, along with your grade, the Section you have entered and whether or not you have requested a bye. This is further confirmation that we have received your entry and that you will be included in the draw.

I am grateful for your feedback. I hope I have answered your question.

I sent Bideford games in weeks ago - when will they be published?
Wednesday 3 September 2008

Spectrum Chess Response   Thanks for your message, Kevin.

There has been a slight delay due to long summer holidays - you know, deep blue skys, crystal clear waters, swimming with dolphins etc etc.

Anyway, the games are now published. Thanks for taking the time to send them to me.

very pleased to see that my photographs are appreciated, and being put to good use:)despite my enquiring at Dudley and several times since then, the Sheffield congress is still not showing as having been graded on the ECF website.May i suggest that the results be submitted within say 1 month of the tournament being completed. If Blackpool and Scarborough can get there results in on a timely basis, then surely a far smaller spectrum congress can do likewise. If you refer back to the first posting in this forum, you will see that the same problem was happening in 2004!!

Hi,

I see the website says the Guernsey and Portsmouth results are available online, however I see the 2nd Guernsey Congress and the 3rd Guernsey Congress results are identical?

Regards.

There was some discussion about whether the players review should be retained. I have always enjoyed these and found them to be of great value and to put forward some thoughts and to hear what is being planned. Not every review need be lengthy and if some players really dont like them they can always come in a few minutes later.

One tip - I was observing how difficult it is to get the attention of us chaotic types. Rattling a spoon in a cup of glass is really effective and is perhaps a little more elegant than raising voices to be heard.

I am very much looking forward to Guernsey - after having had a particularly lean time at Exeter.

Many thanks for the great work and great enjoyment that I for one have had at the last few Congresses.

Hi everyone @ Spectrum and a Happy New Year.

Thankyou for continuing to run congress chess.
Please can i make a heartfelt suggestion for the forthcoming Dudley event (jan 2008.)

Please please can you provide more room inbetween the table rows so that players are not fighting for chair space with the person behind!

The room is big enough to do this - maybe the bookstall needs to live somewhere else for the weekend.
Thanks!
Saturday 5 January 2008

Spectrum Chess Response   We always try to arrange the tables as conveniently as possible.
Sometimes, when the numbers dictate, a section is played in one of the board rooms upstairs. It is not clear yet about the numbers for the 12th Dudley at the end of this month to know how the room/s will be arranged.

The bookstall needs to be in the playing room so that it can be supervised continuously.

Hello, I played in the Cardiff Spectrum Congress in 2005. Are there any plans in the future to hold any more tournaments in Cardiff (or South Wales in general)?
Cheers, James

Congratulations on the new look -- however, pleased to see that the familiar "clock & king" motif hasn`t disappeared altogether.
Delighted, though, to no longer find my humiliating `double exchange` loss to Colin Solloway in the "Games" section!

Spectrum Chess Response   ...although, it could be arranged! Only kidding, Peter. Thanks for the positive feedback. I hope that the site not only looks better but is also easier to use. (Colin Solloway).

I have now had my first visit to the new Spectrum website. Congratulations, Colin, on a completely new look. It looks fresh and exciting. Norman, Karen and I will do our bit to keep you plied with up-to-date information.

Thanks for all your hard work on our behalf.

Thank you for more enjoyable congresses during 2006 -- pleased you`ve
dropped the digital clocks!
There seems to be a small glitch in the "Results" pages for Sheffield
(Nov 2006) -- clicking on Tournament Report brings up the Cardiff
Report!! Or is this due to the dodgy library computer I`m on??

Spectrum Chess Response   Thanks for the feedback, Pete. The errors will be corrected. We hope to see you at our events in 2007.

Is the Dudley Jan 2004 Congress to be graded ? It hadn't been as at a few days ago.
Tuesay 29 June 2004

Spectrum Chess Response   It is our intention to grade all our congresses, and we will do so as soon as possible after each event. However, we cannot say exactly when this will be.
